Role Model Responsible Drinking

Kids often pay more attention to what adults do rather than what adults say. Leading by example and demonstrating responsible drinking when consuming around children helps them learn through role modeling how to handle alcohol when they are older.

A Growing Concern in Our Community

  • 71% increase in young Ohio women reporting binge drinking over the past decade-officially surpassing their male counterparts in recent years (Ohio Medicaid Assessment Survey)
  • An estimated 20-30 million taxpayer dollars are spent in Warren County every year to offset the negative effects of binge drinking (2010 National and State costs of excessive alcohol consumption)
  • The average Ohio Binge Drinker consumed 764 alcoholic beverages per year, ranking second in the nation (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
  • Data from the Warren County Pride Survey (2022) completed by students in 6th-12th grade shows that nearly 2/3 of local students are drinking alcohol by the time they graduate
  • 85% of Warren and Clinton County adults don't binge drink, Be One of Us

Be a Positive Role Model

Drink responsibly, it's as easy as one, two, three

  • 1 standard drink per hour
  • 2 standard drinks per day (up to 14 in a week)
  • 3 standard drinks on any single day

The standard drink

  • 12 ounces of regular beer (about 5% alcohol)
  • 8-9 ounces of malt liquor (about 7% alcohol)
  • 5 ounces of table wine (about 12% alcohol)
  • 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits (about 40% alcohol)

For people on medications, pregnant, under the age of 21; or have certain health problems, 0 is always the recommended low-risk choice.

Substance use in children can most easily be predicted by three core measurements:

  • Perception of harm
  • Friends' approval/disapproval
  • Parental disapproval

"I know some parents - if their kid has friends over at their house, then yeah, as long as they're here they can drink." - Anonymous Warren County Student

Actions speak louder than words

Binge Drinking is Largely Misunderstood

Binge Drinking is associated with the following health concerns:

  • High Blood Pressure
  • Stroke
  • Heart Disease
  • Liver Disease
  • Cancer
  • Obesity
